My dwelling place shall be with them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Then the nations shall know that I the Lord sanctify Israel, when my sanctuary is with them forevermore. Ezekiel 37: 27-28A mosaic consists of thousands of little stones. Some are blue, some are green, some are yellow, some are gold. When we bring our faces close to the mosaic, we can admire the beauty of each stone. But as we step back from it, we can see that all these little stones reveal to us a beautiful picture, telling a story non of these stones can tell by itself.
That is what our community is all about. Each of us is a little stone, but together we reveal the face of God to the world. Nobody can say, "I made God visible." But others who see us together can say, "They made God visible." Community is where humility and glory touch.
What part are you playing in your neighbourhood? In your parish? Are you doing too little? Are you trying to do too much?
And from Thomas Merton ...
Merton's Voice: Having given up all desire to compete with other men, they suddenly wake up and find that the joy of God is everywhere, and they are able to exult in the virtues and goodness of others more than ever they could have done in their own. They are so dazzled by the reflection of God in the souls of the men they live with that they no longer have any power to condemn anything that they see in another.
Merton, Thomas, New Seeds of Contemplation. New York: New Directions, 1961, p. 60
Prayer: Light dawns for the righteous, and joy for the upright in heart. Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous, and give thanks to his holy name!
(NRSV Ps 97:11-12)
